U.N. Designates Nov. 5 as World Tsunami Awareness Day
The U N General Assembly adopted a Japanese-led resolution to designate Nov 5 as World Tsunami Awareness Day. The tsunami day designation is aimed at raising awareness among people in the world of the dangers of tsunami and stressing the importance of early warning systems in order to mitigate damage.Related events and activities are expected to be held by the United Nations and other organizations around Nov. 5 every year. Moves to set the world tsunami day fully began after the third U.N. World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in March in Sendai, one of the areas hit hardest by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
