Hislop granted heritage status by UGC

City's iconic 133-year Hislop College has been granted "heritage" status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and will receive financial assistance for its improvement and upgradation. Hislop College is one of the 19 institutions, all of them above 100 years old, across the country to be granted this special status. Pune's Fergusson College and Mumbai's St Xavier's College are the other prominent ones from Maharashtra to be included in the UGC list.

The colleges which have been granted the status include St Xavier's College, Mumbai; CMS College Kottayam; St Joseph College, Trichy; Khalsa College, Amritsar; St Bede's College, Shimla, Christ Church College in Kanpur, Old Agra College, Agra; Meerut College, Meerut; and Langat Singh College in Bihar's Muzaffarpur.

Others which have figured in the list are Government Brennan College, Kerala; University College in Mangalore, Cotton College in Guwahati, Midnapore College in West Bengal, Government Medical Science College in Jabalpur, Deccan Education Society's Fergusson College in Pune, Hislop College in Nagpur, Government Gandhi Memorial Science College in Jammu, Kanya Mahavidyalya in Jalandhar and St Xavier's College in Kolkata.
